Archgoat ""The Apocalyptic Triumphator" Debemur Morti Productions (2015)

Archgoat spewed forth their latest offering to the world this year with "The Apocalyptic Triumphator". Behold, for it is their strongest work to date in my opinion. While the artwork is as straightforward as it gets, the music is by no means simple. The line up in this record are: Lord Angelslayer in bass & vocals; Ritual Butcherer in the guitars and songwriting too; Sinisterror in drums. 

The thing that strikes me the most is how much Archgoat have grown since their unhallowed resurrection from the black abyss. Whore of Bethlehem is in-your-face flaying heaviness. The Light-Devouring Darkness continues the blasphemous black crusade with more polished sound while missing bits and pieces of the raw energy found in their debut. Come 2015, the band presented to us what can be described as the absolute manifestation of the very black art that they live by and die for.

The pieces its an amazing blasphemous like “Nuns, Cunts and Darkness” is just the kind of song title you’d expect to get from Archgoat. Starting off with the traditional esophagus-crushing riff played over choked cymbal, it is a solid offering that sets the stage for what’s to come on the rest of the album. This particular song stays true to the band’s roots. Yes. They need not to change anything.

Archgoat managed to inject profane surprises into each song. The vocals are still the same with occasional scream in between but this time, spoken parts made a brief cameo as well and they are very clearly heard. The best example for this would be “Grand Luciferian Theophany” where all the more cliché “Hail Satan” and “Hail Lucifer” are chanted repeatedly.

While Archgoat are often not associated with pure blinding speed like other bands in the same Satanic den, “Phallic Desecrator of Sacred Gates” and “Congregation of Circumcised” have top-notch speed that is not quite prominent in their previous releases. “Phallic Desecrator of Sacred Gates” also opens with drum rolls I have never heard of in their career, particularly in their last two full lengths. This fact proves to be a valuable addition to the band style of playing which indicates that they have progressed somehow while obstinately retaining the concept that they helped conceived from the very first day.

Another element that makes this record a winner is the surprising inclusion of lead solos, albeit sparsely. As I said, the lead guitar is employed sparingly but to a greater effect that it does not bore you in the long run. The solos are of course non melodic, they are instead sinister in nature, like a wolf lurking among the woods at night, stalking your every move before it jumps on you to disembowel you alive. Correct me if I’m wrong but this is the first time in my life that I get to hear Angelslayer’s bass solo on the middle section of “Funeral Pyre of Trinity”, which is yet another great surprise from this record.

Personally, this is the most brilliant work by Archgoat. Just the kind of output that is to be expected from the trio of Satanic crusaders from Finland. The band have definitely grown in the music department. The production is clear and subtle but it is no less aggressive from their previous offerings. Despite the blackening progression, the message behind their music remains the same; defilement of all things holy, adulation to the horned Lord, and the ever-present play on private parts, with the band now targeting a group of circumcised men of God for irreverent desecration. The Apocalyptic Triumphator is indeed a triumphant achievement for Archgoat. It is a surprise that many people have yet to review this disgusting masterpiece.

One the best underground album of 2015. Amazing record from the finish lands with full power of blasphemy.

Tsjuder "Antiliv" Season Of Mist (2015)

The eightfold dosage of the devil's work is upon us! 4 years have passed since the outstanding Legion Helvete and finally Tsjuder disclosed to us the new creation "Antiliv" was release in september 18th, 2015. Continuing on taking no prisoners, the band once again validates its position on the black metal scene. A cult album from Season Of Mist label in double LP in vinyl 12" rpm.  

No salvation or deliverance! It's the pure Tsjuder at its best. You simply can't get more straight to the point than with the opening Kaos - the characteristic Tsjuder sound makes the band impossible to be confused with any other outfit. Traditional black metal values are cultivated and Antiliv is firmly rooted in them. The speed and eagerness is no different to previous releases but the extra shot of chaos makes the new album stand out. The sound is impeccable and the whole album is recorded with a care for details which allow you to pick up a lot of bewitching moments. Nag's vocals remain on the very high level and, being a medium of spreading evil, act as perfect addendum for the album's professional production. This proper anti-life mixture seems to be very diverse in spite of the apparent one-dimensional character of Tsjuder. The good black'n'roll overtones of Demonic Supremacy and its mid-track slowdown bring the touch of the old dirty metal and, interestingly, give Antiliv some form of freshness which I always look for in black metal. Also, the title song features the most catchy riff which automatically makes my head go up and down. Amazing blasphemous lyrics in english & norwegian. 

The limited edition of Antiliv has got a potential to be one of my favourite releases this year. The quality and attention to details is outstanding and it shamelessly stands for the True Norwegian Black Metal. It contains the rehearsal versions of three songs plus two cover tracks. Tsjuder covering Mayhem's Deathcrush... Can you get more Norwegian? The other one is a tribute to the cult scene of Finland with a fantastic performance of Unholy Pagan Fire by Beherit. The box also contains the beautiful flag and band's patch.

Antiliv is a little bit less uncompromising songs than the preceding Legion Helvete but it brings more novelty to Tsjuder's discography. They might be comparable albums in terms of dynamism and energy, however Antiliv clicks immediately as a brilliant record. Tsjuder successfully consolidated its status and I hope they bring the same vitality spreading the plague through the live shows. Total Black Metal in the vein of cold forest and misanthropy world. The lyrics are amazing don´t have a changes respect to others albums.

Way better than Legion Helvete, the new Tsjuder record forcefully demonstrates that some veterans of the Norwegian scene are still able to carry powerful albums that get their energy directly from the dark source. Uncompromising and merciless, Antiliv is a must and should be heard by anyone who claims to be a black metal fan.

Alverg "Elde" Soulseller Records (2009)

Alverg is a norwegian Black Metal band was founded in 2002 in Grimstad, Norway. The band was a couple members in the vein of classic sound from the past, but add new element like acustic guitars and piano atmospheric in the songs. Alverg release a demo in 2003 by independent label, and take a break for a few years, they was reactivated in 2005 and compose a few new songs for a new album.

Finally! in march 29th, 2009 we will present the first album “Elde” by Norwegian Alverg on vinyl for the very first time! Limited to 250 copies on black double vinyl, presented with gatefold outer sleeve, printed inner sleeves and instrumental bonus track! Absolute epic black metal masterpiece, must-own!. The members are: Heolstor in drums & Lóge in vocals & guitars. A blasphemous couple from the hell.

When a first ear the demo 2003, the sound was in the vein of Old School and I think the new album ear like this, my mind instantly thinks of all the bands keeping it old school, paying tribute to Mayhem, Darkthrone and many more; but the album is fast, unrelenting blasting. But Alverg certainly doesn’t fit into that category. In fact I wouldn’t call this pounding at all, but more of a slower atmospheric type of black metal. Amazing songs between ambient, Black Metal & folk. 

A great piano-piece starts the album instantly building to the sombre, bleak mood that is the backbone of "Elde". This is an extremely atmospheric album, where the riffs are heart-felt and the vocals reach into your core. Bnads like Enslaved or Ancient Wisdom feels inevitable to mention for comparison, as well as a small dose of Burzum albums. The tempo is rather slow for the most-part, but certainly not to the point of doom metal, follow in the vein of Black Metal. Vocally it’s fairly silent, almost just lurking in the background, cursing life itself. But what is Alverg’s strongest selling-point must be the riffs, since you can’t find warmer riffing that feels so chilling. There are some magnificent guitar lines to be found here, and together with the haunting vocals and skilled drumming they build up an amazing atmosphere. I can’t help but to be overwhelmed with emotions; negativity, darkness, depression and misanthropy burdening my inner essence.

Finally I say "Elde" is a one-hour long trip where you’ll be haunted by your own personal demons. Close the shades, turn off the lights, crawl up into foetal position and feel the weight of the world come down on you. Enjoy the album in the middle of night, is ideal soundtrack for Black Metal mind.

Mgla "Exercises In Futility" Northern Heritage Records (2015)

Hey Black Metal fans welcome at the review an amazing album, in the vein of Polish Black Metal this masters are: Mgła 

The strength of this poland band as far back with brutal and melodic riffs in the same parts songs, has always been the straightforward riffs and how they remain memorable, even when emphasized and repeated. Somehow, despite staying strictly confined to a melodic Black Metal realm leading to a similarity in theme between songs, this band has a multitude of tracks and moments for show our style. "Exercises in Futility" was released in september 4th, 2015, this album is classic band sound, this album is no exception to this; while my favorite tracks on this vinyl album were the first and last ones after the first few listens, 

I started gravitating towards "Exercises II" and "Exercises IV" once I had listened to the opener and closer way too many times, and then eventually the rest of the tracks grew on me once I gave them more time. Every track has something really cool to offer, which is something I couldn't even say about past Mgla album after all, but there are none to be found here. Exercises in Futility is surprisingly diverse despite remaining within the parameters of the band's style, and as a result it sounds the most well-rounded of any album they've put out.

There are a couple extra spices that have been thrown into the mix that give Exercises in Futility its own flavor compared to Mgła's previous releases. Primarily the drums. Especially the drums. The way Darkside dances on the cymbals effortlessly to make the standard blast heavy black metal drumming really stick with you is awe-inspiring and persists throughout every song. The moments where the drums lay off the blasting for a little bit and settle into the pocket are great tension-releases, too, and the songs that have a mid-paced groove in them are on a whole new level as a result. I'm particularly thinking of the moments at the beginning of the album, the opening of the fifth track and the groove midway through the closing track--each one of these three segments of music is near-impossible not to bang your head to. It's rare that I find myself noting a black metal drummer having really interesting beats, but shit, this guy might be one of the most memorable drummers I've ever heard. The voice of "M" is really brutal, in the vein of Raw Black Metal and Depressive Suicide Black Metal without turning it. An amazing style 

The real beauty of Mgla lays in their songwriting, however. Because their riffs are so melodically similar to one another, they write songs that can take proper time and care to introduce the best riffs while still keeping every moment interesting in some way. They always write a hell of an epic closer, too (I'm starting to notice that I really like it when a band has a larger-than-life final track), and "Exercises VI" holds its own with the best of 'em. Starting off with a nice acoustic intro, a triumphant tremolo riff crashes in to introduce the black metal element, and then the song goes to a rolling double-kick while playing the distorted version of the opening riff. It sounds somewhat simple and mundane when I type it out, but I swear it's genius when you actually hear how it flows. 

Earlier Mgla was riffy and enjoyable on a more primitive level, but now that these guys have more patient songwriting everything stays as enjoyable on the twentieth spin as it was the first time around. "Mgla's third album shows them really maturing as a band and expanding on their earlier albums while staying true to their core" sounds like some stock music-journalist tripe and it pains me to even write a sentence like that, but at the same time I can't say it's incorrect. For me was a best Black Metal album in the 2015, for above others albums in the same style. Mgła is an awesome horde in the Black Metal scene in the world, all records are amazing and brutal, your fans are to much appear in the world at the last years. This is because your unholy hymns are present in the life of metalhead every time.

Black Overdrive "Discord" Oz Music (2015)

La capital de la República Mexicana siempre ha sido semillero de grandiosas bandas de rock y metal de todos los estilos desde la década de los años 50 en cuanto al primero y a partir de la década de los '80s del segundo por lo que no es de extrañarse que algunas de las bandas más importantes de la historia de éstos géneros hayan salido de ésta gran ciudad. El caso que nos ocupa es el de la banda llamada Black Overdrive fundada en el año de 2012 donde nos entregan un ensamble de sonidos bien identificados con el Stoner Rock, el Sludge Metal y el Doom Metal de excelente manufactura por varias cosas que comentaremos aquí.

La banda surgió de la inquietud de 4 músicos mexicanos que buscaban un proyecto al cual pulir de los sonidos ya mencionados líneas arriba, pero más que una entidad paralela fue tomando forma como una banda de mucha fuerza y presencia en el sonido. La alineación la integran en primer lugar el profesor Iván Nieblas "El Patas" (voz y guitarra), Angel Castillo (bajo y coros), René Villanueva (guitarra) y Julio César Pintor (batería), traen la influencia de la pesadez y densidad de los riffs de los maestros del Stoner Rock por ejemplo de Black Sabbath, los Kadavar o Monster Magnet, así como la fiereza y los sonidos del estilo de bandas como Fu Manchu, Cathedral o Corrosion Of Conformity pero aderezado con el sabor latino lo cual les da un plus extra por encima del resto de las bandas que integran sonidos similares.  

La banda lanzó un demo en el año 2012 con 6 piezas de muy buena manufactura con el cual fueron haciéndose de una reputación entre la escena metalera nacional ya que incluye canciones que integran su esperado álbum debut titulado "Discord" el cual salió a la venta el 25 de febrero del 2015 a través de la legendaria label Oz Music (que publicó otros discos de culto en los años '90s de la escena mexicana) en formato digipack.

Los Black Overdrive han sido teloneros de dos de las bandas más fuertes de la escena Stoner como Corrosion of Conformity y Spiritual Beggars(ni más ni menos), así como de Toxic Holocaust, Black Tusk, P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S., Hell’s Fire (España) y participaron en el festival Hell and Heaven 2013 al lado de Anthrax, Motörhead, Exodus, Testament entre muchas más. Por lo que su presencia en los escenarios es una fuerte carta de presentación en cuanto al Stoner Metal se refiere.

La primera pieza del disco es una clara influencia de muchas agrupaciones que nos posee el oído a la primera escucha, por ello "Discord" la pieza homónima del disco es una fuerte carta para que la banda se presente ante nosotros. Una pieza con tintes rápidos con partes semilentas donde juegan un papel importante todos los instrumentos sin que uno tenga que  al otro.

"Misery Mountain" debe considerarse un clásico desde ya para la agrupación que nos entrega en éste segundo track, Excelente pieza de Stoner a medio tempo que caracteriza a las guitarras al estilo Black Sabbath pero con la diferencia en los golpes de la batería, sin duda que la voz de Iván entrega otra gran diferencia a la hora de identificar el sonido de la banda. Tremenda composición del cuarteto. 

Otra pieza que me gustaría destacarles es la titulada "Getaway" la cual trae raíces de los sonidos festivos de los grandiosos Fu Manchu o Monster Magnet dejando en claro que lo suyo es el guitarreo de modo adictivo para todo el que escucha por primera vez a la banda, para mi una de sus composiciones mejor logradas de todo el estupendo disco, el coro tiene mucho que ver al igual que los solos de guitarra verdaderamente adictivos. Tremendo!!!

Discazo de Stoner!!!

Horna "HengenTulet" World Terror Committee (2015)

Una vez más las huestes capitaneadas por el gran Shatraug regresan a la escena mundial del underground con un disco de la oscuridad finesa, de ese sonido surgido de la gélida tierra del norte donde el sol casi nunca ve la luz, allí donde la esperanza siempre es ensombrecida por el eterno invierno de esa parte del mundo. Allí surgió "Hengen Tulet" su disco de larga duración del 2015 producida por la label World Terror Committee. Ha regresado el Black Metal 100% fines.

La alineación de la banda finesa Horna está integrada actualmente por Shatraug e Infection en las guitarras, en las vocales Spellgoth, Hex Inferi en el bajo y cerrando el quinteto con Vainaja en la batería. La horda nos demuestra que a pesar de los cambios de alineación permanece la militancia infernal en el sonido sin piedad ni misericordia como debe ser el Raw Black Metal fines, y ésta banda se lo tiene ganado a pulso con su ya extensa discografía, su Black Metal ya conocido por su atmósfera maligna desde el principio del disco.

Con una producción Raw totalmente, con la batería y la voz ecualizada brutalmente que no te dejará con alguna duda de que el Black Metal todavía respira aires de malignidad total, muy potente el sonido. La banda siembra el terror con la pieza abridora "Amadriada" una pieza de su sonido clásico de excelente producción y composición de su historia discográfica. 

La otra pieza que me gustaría destacar es la titulada "Nekromantia" todo un himno de la oscuridad con ese potente sonido Raw Black Metal en su composición, los instrumentos suenan muy malévolos de principio a fin la banda se esmeró en crear atmósferas con los instrumentos que tocan, sin el uso de efectos sonoros u otros instrumentos adicionales por lo que todo que aquí escuchas es el sonido de la banda realmente.

Uno de los mejores discos del 2015 debo reconocerlo sin duda, un disco sin fisuras sin contemplaciones sin pretenciones de aparentar algo que no tienen en el sonido, sólo hay puro y brutal Black Metal debido a que el regreso del grupo a la escena discográfica no deja satisfechos a quienes escuchamos el subgénero maldito del Metal y sobretodo de esa parte del mundo que siempre nos ha entregado material de buena manufactura.

Amorphis "Under The Red Cloud" Nuclear Blast (2015)

Los veteranos Amorphis regresaron a las cubiertas de las tiendas de discos con su duodécimo material publicado en su discografía, éste disco de los veteranos fineses viene a ser -hasta este momento- no uno de los discos más interesantes del Gothic Doom Metal de 2015 sino el mejor del Metal del año que recién concluyó, aunque con claras influencias del Rock progressivo y del Symphonic Metal. Creo que "Under The Red Cloud" puede que sea un reverdecer para la banda, acercándose a su mejor disco en los tiempos actuales en una historia que inició en 1992, al menos cerca del nivel (salvando las distancias claro está) de su laureado segundo disco "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" de 1994 uno de los discos más importantes del género Death Metal y de escucha obligada para quien le interese este tipo de Metal.

Ha sido producido por Jens Bogren (que trabaja con muchas de las bandas de metal nórdicas que conocen) y contiene 10 nuevos cortes más dos bonus tracks, salió a la venta el 4 de septiembre de 2015. El line up de la banda estuvo conformado por la siguiente alineación: Tomi Joutsen en las vocales, Tomi Koivusaari en la guitarra rítmica, Esa Holopainen en la guitarra líder, Santeri Kallio en los teclados, Niclas Etelävuori en el bajo y Jan Rechberger en la batería. 

En las últimas obras de Amorphis, la banda optó por buscar los extremos en su propio rango musical, que abarca el death metal, el doom metal, gothic metal, el metal progresivo y el folk de principio a fin en éste disco grabado en los Fascination Street Studios, es un disco muy melódico cómo Skyforger y sus imperdibles piezas "Sampo" o "Silver Bride", los estribillos en la mayoría de los temas ayudan a digerir un disco bastante técnico que pese a su complejidad es muy fácil de escuchar. Muy variado, definitivamente es un paso adelante respecto a los dos últimos trabajos, y además retoma ideas de épocas anteriores. Las más obvias son seguramente las influencias egipcias y de oriente medio, algo ya escuchado en el tercer LP de la banda, "Elegy". Las guturales del vocal ayudan mucho a darle potencia al disco así como las voces limpias en los coros que nos dejan las letras en el cerebro una vez que los escuchas. 

Desde el principio nos adentramos a las guitarras cabalgantes y melódicas para luego dar paso a las voces guturales seguidos de los coros limpios que se mezclan a la perfección, dando paso luego a los pasajes acústicos o progresivos con los instrumentos.

“The Four Wise Ones”, que arranca con un doble pedal rápido, una cama de guitarras muy deathmetalera y un gutural recién traído del averno. Me gusta cómo se amalgama la voz gutural con las guitarras en las estrofas. La banda en su conjunto se lucen mucho con la pieza una de las más brillantes del disco.

En la pieza "Bad Blood" el trabajo de guitarras es muy completo y no es el típico 'palm mute' mientras el cantante hace su trabajo. Buen equilibrio entre los guturales y la voz limpia. El folk y las influencias arabescas presiden. 

Con la canción llamada “The Skull”, uno de los cortes más duros del trabajo pero que también contiene partes melódicas y progresivas donde los instrumentos manejados con maestría nos dan una pieza de lujo. 

Con la canción “Death Of A King”, una de las más folk pero también una de las más contundentes del CD le damos las palmas a la banda por su brillante composición. Fue el primer adelanto que escuchamos y, con razón. Tiene un fuerte componente comercial, a pesar de que las estrofas estén cantadas en gutural. Un himno de la banda desde ya. 

Cabe destacar a la pieza llamada “Sacrifice” es el segundo single de la placa (el videoclip está de lujo una obra de roducción de la Nuclear Blast) y tiene ese aire de single que tan bien le funcionó a la banda con “House of Sleep”, por citar un ejemplo conocido. Con éstas piezas tenemos cerca de la mitad de las canciones que nos dejan con el oído a gusto de escuchar excelentes composiciones que sólo la experiencia como banda te puede dar, los fineses Amorphis renacieron de las cenizas del Old School Death Metal para adentrarse en los sonidos del metal contemporáneo.

SATANIC WARMASTER / ARCHGOAT - Lux Satanae (Thirteen Hymns Of Finnish Devil Worship) (Hells Headbangers, 2015)

La label underground Hells Headbangers se lució a final de año con la publicación de un Split de culto entre los adeptos del Black Metal, el ocultismo y demás temáticas oscurantistas para publicar el 14 de diciembre del 2015, el material discográfico llamado "Lux Satane (Thirteen Hymns of Finnish Devil Worship)" en formato vinilo de lujo de 12" vinyl (33⅓ RPM) entre las emblemáticas bandas Satanic Warmaster y Archgoat. Una edición limitada en 222 piezas numeradas a mano, aunque también salió en formato CD, pero el vinilo se lleva las palmas por su diseño sin duda. Fue de los discos más buscados por las hordas de los seguidores de lo oculto a nivel mundial, ya que las dos bandas poseen seguidores en casi todas partes del mundo rompiendo las barreras como el idioma y las ideologías.

La banda ARCHGOAT en está ocasión estuvo compuesta por Lord Angelslayer en el bajo y la voz gutural, Ritual Butcherer en las guitarras y VnoM en la batería. Mientras que los también fineses SATANIC WARMASTER están integrados por nada más que el multiconocido Satanic Tyrant Werwolf y músicos de sesión. Así las hordas nos presentan material de total underground de ese Black Metal que transpira mucha blasfemia de principio a fin debido al estilo de ambas que se complementan a la perfección, aquí la oscuridad reina de principio a fin sin parar hasta que termina el disco. Poco más de 40 minutos de Black Metal brutal, denso, maligno como deben ser las obras del "metal negro" en sus grabaciones. La producción es de lujo ya que el sonido es excelente, sin ninguna fisura y a pesar de la rudeza de la grabación nos permiten escuchar claramente lo que tiene cada una de las hordas para ofrecernos en cuestión musical.

El material de los fineses Satanic Warmaster aunque son pocas piezas nos demuestran su calidad a la hora de componer y plasmar su maligno estilo en cada canción, son canciones que han formado parte de otros discos de la banda, pero que en verdad suenan brutales y no desentonan. Por su parte los Archgoat fieles a su estilo de herederos del sonido de bandas legendarias como Beherit o Blasphemy nos permiten escuchar una feroz y blasfema amalgama entre el Death Metal y Black Metal de antaño, de ese que surgió en la década de los '90s.  Muy en la línea de la vieja escuela respetando enormemente su estilo que los ha encumbrado en el underground europeo. En verdad que como dice el título del split son 13 himnos de adoración diabólica por donde se le quiera escuchar, no hay mas, aquí no encontrarás melodía, teclados u otra señal de concesión en cuanto al sonido. La brutalidad ésta presente desde el principio y eso lo hace atractivo para quienes lo escuchan sin lugar a dudas. Me quedo con las dos grabaciones de las bandas, ya que ambas dentro de su estilo nos consiguen transmitir el odio, el ocultismo, lo rituales, la adoración al maligno desde el principio y todo ello logrado con el empleo de los instrumentos más básicos, es decir, la guitarra, bajo y la batería todos ellos acompañados por las voces malignas. 

Todas las piezas fueron grabados en dos estudios diferentes, los Satanic Warmaster lo hicieron en el Satanic Metal Temple y por su parte los Archgoat lo grabaron en el Temple of the Blackmoon. Grandioso trabajo publicado por estos fineses. Desde suelo europeo se sigue respirando la blasfemia con todo su poder. Solamente vieron la luz 222 copias debidamente numeradas en todo el mundo por lo que si no logran conseguir éstas piezas de colección muy difícilmente lo harán, ya que la legión de seguidores con las cuales cuentan cada una de éstas bandas es enorme alrededor del mundo, no hay seguidor del underground que no cuente entre sus bandas preferidas a éstas dos que integran uno de los splits más emblemáticos de todos os tiempos. 

Excelente diseño de la portada, de las mejores que haya visto en los últimos tiempos por parte de una horda de Black Metal, sin duda que va muy acorde con lo que transmite el disco. Por lo que el trabajo y particularmente su maligno diseño merecen un reconocimiento de parte de los metalheads por lograr que la escena que aparece en la portada te atrape la atención y no quites la vista de encima de ella. No sabemos quien es el autor de éste gran trabajo pero seguro no será difícil dar con sus datos.
